Galliano was an important source of\u00a0 revenue for the Ubaldini family because it was the last fortified town before reaching the Apennines: it was a rest stop that offered hospitality for travellers who had to pay a transit fee. Pope Gregory X passed through the town at the end of the 13th<\/sup> century on his way to the Council of Lyon, and\u2015according to some scholars\u2015so did Dante on his way to Bologna in the summer of 1286.
